Naomi Kawase: Wonderland Behind the Camera

As a filmmaker who usually explores themes related to personal experiences and regional culture, Naomi Kawase attempted to use her films as a bridge to connect viewers. In her pictures, the mysterious, concrete but abstract theatre-like world constructs a one-of-a-kind wonderland to audiences. Through her narrative, we are able to sense the geographic features, local customs as well as fine sentiment concealed in different characters.
From October 16 to 31, this themed film screening will represent 8 films created by Japanese Director Naomi Kawase in three consecutive weekends, which contains 4 feature films (Still The Water, The Mourning Forest, Hanezu, Suzaku) and 4 documentary works (Chiri, Katatsumori, Embracing, Genpin). When immersing in the tranquil and pure scenes, these films will guide us to overcome boundaries between people and make us re-recognise ourselves.
